Frequenly Asked Questions

Q: What games do i need to install this?
A: Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. Having SMOD 40a installed is not required as Redux includes it by default.
Q: Why can't i kill friendly NPC's?
A: Set the 'SMOD Skill Level' to 'Medium' or higher.
Q: How do i enable the Special Effects and Gore?
A: You are expected to use The SMOD Menu System to configure SMOD specific settings before playing. See THIS PAGE for more information about it.
Q: Is this the latest version of SMOD?
A: Redux is a fan-made addon that includes SMOD 40a. It is not the official SMOD package or supported by The SMOD Author. The official SMOD page can be found HERE.
Q: Why do i need Half-Life 2: Deathmatch? Can i play without it?
A:As of Version 7, SMOD Redux uses the maps and certain textures fromHalf-Life 2: Deathmatch. If you try to play without it installed, Youwill likely crash, And even if you don't you will not be able to usethe new maps that it provides.
Q: Can i play without Half-Life 2? Can you make it not require Half-Life 2 to play?
A:No. SMOD is built on Half-Life 2's code and uses almost every bit of it's content to play. Making it not require Half-Life 2 to play would be highly illegal.
Q: Will SMOD Redux support multiplayer or Episode 1/2?
A: I do not have the source code to SMOD, So no. Only The SMOD Author has the code to make these changes and it is up to him to do so.
Q: Will SMOD Redux ever be made for SMOD2? (SMOD Remake on the Orange Box engine)
A: Currently, no version of SMOD Redux is planned as The SMOD Author has yet to implement several key features of SMOD into SMOD2. If and when these features are added, A version of Redux will be considered for SMOD2.
Q: What about your Episode 1 Addon? Will SMOD Redux support it?
A: No. Episode 1 proved to have too many bugs and issues to properly work with SMOD and the addon is currently discontinued. I will not offer further support for it.
Q: I am getting issues like being able to use older Redux weapons despite installing the new version, As well as other strange bugs.
A: Delete your smodredux folder before installing a new version or issues like this may happen.
Q: I keep getting money items. What do they do?
A: They typically only appear on the 'SMOD' gamemode setting. They replace the health vials/kits and HEV batteries and are spent at the Health/HEV wall chargers to use them.
Q: Why do the loading times take so long?
A: SMOD adds many more entities (NPC's, Weapons) into the maps by it's mapadd system, Resulting in longer load times as more are added. SMOD also does not make full use of the precache system Half-Life 2 has so that result in in-game loading of entities as well. It is recommended to have at least 1GB of RAM to enjoy any version of SMOD.
Q: My frames-per-second is much lower then what i get in HL2 and i get performance issues.
A: Many of SMOD's new effects and features are intensive on the CPU unit and Graphics Card. Aside from turning the SMOD effects setting down in the menu, Also try turning down or off your anti-aliasing level and other Half-Life 2 graphics settings.
Q: SMOD Redux does not appear on my steam list!
A: Make sure you have restarted Steam and installed the smodredux folder into your SourceMods folder (Not the contents of the smodredux folder)
Q: The Bullsquid does not gib or squirt blood when it dies.
A: That's because SMOD didn't add it's special ragdoll/death effects to the Bullsquid as it was not fully coded into SMOD. There is nothing i can do to fix this.
Q: When i play the new maps i see some NPC's spawn in walls and floors.
A: This is due to SMOD's method of spawning NPC's randomly at nodes and some questionable node placement by the node converter. Nodes are very hard to remove after being placed.
Q: When i use the 'impulse 101' command i don't get the new Redux weapons.
A: This is because the custom weapons in vanilla SMOD would have conflicted with the normal weapons so The SMOD Author did not add them to the cheat. Use the new 'giveall' console command or the key bind in the controls section instead to give you all the weapons instead.
Q: I tried to install this into Garry's Mod and it didn't work.
A: Despite the name similarity and a few similar features, SMOD has no relation to Garry's MOD (GMOD). SMOD (and by extension Redux) is a separate mod for Half-Life 2.
Q: I noticed that SMOD uses LUA files, Can weapons/NPCs be coded in by LUA like in GMOD?
A: No. SMOD uses LUA primarily for it's mapadd system and does not support coding in new weapons or NPC's by LUA.
Q: On some weapons the ironsights look misaligned until i fire.
A: This is due to SMOD's ironsight system moving the origins of the weapon instead of using unique animations.

The original mod was made by 'The SMOD Author'. This fan-mod and manual was made by Onemanshow with help and information from others. While this manual is mainly for SMOD Redux, much of it applies to SMOD as well.

5: New Maps and Map Changes

1:Introduction

The original SMOD (Suspected to stand for SuperMOD although it is not confirmed) is a modification (mod) of the video game Half-Life 2 on the Source Engine. SMOD adds a large number of graphical and gameplay features and most notably allows the user to customize these to a extent only below Garry's Mod.
Summery of SMOD's Features:
-A wide variety of new weapons.
-Enhanced Visual Effects. Including Tone Mapping, Motion Blur, and new Particle Effects.
-New player abilities. Including Quick Kicking and Bullet Time.
-New enemies such as the Killer Scanner, Stalkers, and Optically Camouflaged Combine.
-Increased Gore and Blood.
-More enemies, events, and allies in the Half-Life 2 Campaign.
-Scalable and customizable settings.

SMOD Reduxis a fan-made expansion to SMOD. It takes advantage of SMOD's vast array of customization capabilities to offer even more new content and aims to make customizing SMOD more user-friendly then ever before.

Summery of SMOD Redux's Features:
-13 new weapons and 3+ new types of ammo added thanks to SMOD's custom weapon support.
-The SMOD Menu System. A system that allows the user to customize SMOD's settings right from the main menu.
-Full activation of
Leaning and Night Vision. Which were originally left for modders.
-Working Third-Person camera mode with a Gordon Freeman player model and several different views available.
-Even more new events and enemies added to the Half-Life 2 Campaign.
-The Half-Life 2: Deathmatch maps converted for Single-Player 'Instant Action' style gameplay.
-The tech-demo/bonus level 'The Lost Coast' made playable in SMOD.
-The addition of new enemies that were coded into SMOD, but not enabled. Including the Zombine and Zombie2.
-Numerous bug fixes, model edits, and balance changes.

The Addon Pack
The Redux Addon Pack was created due to the shift in focus starting in Version 7.
The focus was shifted to having less but more polished content in the 'Core' releases as the standard releases are now called, as a common complain about earlier versions was that Redux was buggy and bloated with unneeded content. The Addon Pack is meant for those who want more weapons and maps in SMOD Redux, so players can now choose whether to have the new content or not instead of it being forced upon them.
